Dr. Kevin Soden: Hi, I’m Dr. Kevin Soden. Welcome to Medicare Made Clear. I’m here with United Healthcare’s Dr. Richard Migliori, where we’re helping real people get answers to their Medicare questions.

Senior Man: Well, I would like to know some of the coverages that I have as I get older. During the seasons, say for winter time when the flu season comes on, does Medicare cover my flu shots? And does Medicare cover other vaccines or shots that I can get to prevent illnesses?

Dr. Richard Migliori: As doctors, those are the types of questions we really like to get. Right, Kevin?

Soden: Absolutely, because it tells us when a patient is being proactive about their health.

Migliori: Exactly, and there are a lot of preventive services covered under Medicare. Let’s start with your flu shot. That is covered every year. Medicare also covers glaucoma tests, smoking cessation, diabetes screening, cardiovascular screenings, bone mass measurements, as well as colon, prostate and breast cancer screening.

Soden: What about annual routine physical exams?

Migliori: Oh, I’m glad you reminded me. Those are covered, too, and that’s a crucial way to stay on top of your health. At your yearly exam it’s important to discuss all the medications you take, any symptoms or health concerns you have, your medical conditions and any previous surgery, as well as any changes in your lifestyle or mood.

Soden: And it’s a great way to catch problems early.

Migliori: That’s right. And I should add that certain Medicare Advantage plans offer additional screenings not covered by original Medicare.
